Online Workshop: Neurodiversity in the Voice Studio with Jagmeet Kaur Sangha, M.A., BCBA, Founder of Behavioral Pivot Consulting

Neurodiversity refers to the variation in all human cognition. It is as important for our social communities as biodiversity is for the planet. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourettes, and other related conditions are all examples of neurodivergent abilities. The performing arts field offers a unique opportunity for individuals with neurodiverse traits to find their voice, communicate their experiences and showcase their authentic talents through various forms of artistic expressions. Therefore, creating neuro-inclusive spaces within the arts is exceptionally important to help individuals to embrace and unlock their unique potentials.

In this workshop, we will discuss evidence-based strategies from the science of behavior analysis that promote neuro-affirming learning. Participants will be guided to explore their individual values, identify their strengths, and build self-advocacy skills for themselves as well as their students. These practices support the social acceptance of brain-based differences and foster inclusive environments that help all individuals flourish within their own talents. In this online workshop:

  • Participants will be able to define the impacts of neurodiversity within the teaching studio and how it affects different learning types.

  • Participants will engage in a values discovery journey, using evidence-based methods, leading to strength-based goal setting.

  • Participants will develop methods to embed executive functioning systems that promote goal setting and independence.

Jagmeet Kaur Sangha is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Sacramento State University and a Bachelor's in Sociology from the University of California, Davis.

For over a decade, Jagmeet has worked in homes and schools, providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to children, supporting educators and offering parent training consultations to caregivers. She is invested in educating the community and helping families and individuals to receive top quality behavior intervention services.

Jagmeet uses the science of Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) to promote workplace wellbeing and advance individuals, organizations and society through connection, education and behavior science.

Her organization, Behavior Pivot Consulting works with employees and employers to create neuro-inclusive communities within the workplace by focusing on identifying and building on individual strengths, promoting self advocacy and offering person-centered solutions related to workplace wellness.

Musical Theatre Workshop w/ Meredith Pyle: "Don't Sing It, If You Don't Mean It!"

Sunday, January 29, 2023 (In-Person)

Montclair Presbyterian Church, 5701 Thornhill Drive, Oakland, CA 94611

1:30 - 2:45 Interactive Presentation

3:30 - 5:00 Voice Class Workshop with 4 Singer Participants

Join us for a workshop-style presentation where we employ the same methodology that Florence Birdwell used to transform her students (like Kristin Chenoweth and Kelli O’Hara) from singers into stars. We will apply tools and strategies for communicating song through the art of connection both with one's self and with an audience. The presentation will include examination of the current state of our students, the relationship between communication and connection, and most importantly, class participation with actionable tools to cultivate bravery in the voice studio in an effort to turn emotionless and perfectionistic singers into artists who have something meaningful to say.
